  This term in Science we are learning all about plants. We each planted a sunflower and have been making observations under various conditions. The children have been very interested in watching how the plants are growing and under what conditions!

  Anglo-Saxon Amulets

  We enjoyed kicking off our new topic on Anglo-Saxons by making our very own Anglo-Saxon amulets. We learned how their designs were very intricate and we tried to replicate that, including many details and special jewels too.

  DT - Cooking

  The culmination of our DT unit on Roman food was baking an ancient Roman Honey cake. We took turns very well, carefully measured, whisked and poured. The next day we tasted and evaluated our bake and most of us really enjoyed our creation!

  Shadows

  As part of our unit on light, we talked about how shadows are created (when light is blocked). We then had the opportunity to make a shadow box and see what finger shadow puppets we could make, as well as playing with what happens when the light source is closer or further away.

  Investigating Mirrors

  In science, we investigated mirrors - trying to trace a maze in a reflection, which was very difficult! We also tried writing forward and backwards and noticing what happened when it was reflected in the mirror and we also explored what happened to an object's reflection in more than one mirror.

  Paper Airplanes

  As part of British Science Week, we had the challenge of designing and testing a paper airplane. In order to make it a fair test, we decided we all needed to stand on the same line and then measured the plane that traveled the furthest.

  Tennis

  We enjoyed our tennis session with a coach from the Thornbury Tennis club. We especially found it fun using cones in our hands like crab claws - it was tricky to try and catch the ball using these! We worked hard on trying to control the ball so our partner could return it.

  Investigating Light

  We started our new topic on 'Light' in Science this week. We conducted an experiment where we poked a small hole in a box and peered in to see what we could see. Then we poked a few more holes to see if we could see any objects in the box and, finally we shone a torch in to see if that helped. We concluded that light helps us to see things and when no light is present, it is dark.

  Making Bird Feeders

  We were so excited to get back out in the woods for Outdoor Learning this afternoon. We discussed how birds struggle to find food in the winter as there are fewer berries and insects for them to eat. The children enjoyed making bird feeders using toilet roll, lard and rolling it in bird seed. They then selected the perfect spot to hang their feeders. I overheard comments such as 'I left this bit empty so the birds can perch here' and 'I'm going to hang mine up high so the birds will be safe from predators'.

  New Age Kurling

  We enjoyed our New Age Kurling session, which was hot on the tails of the Winter Olympics! We did some great team work and worked really hard to get the stones in the house. We also had to do some maths to add up our scores!
